St Nicholas Church on Lesser Town

St Nicholas Church on Lesser Town is placed between Prague Castle and Charles Bridge. This big church have robust dome and thin bell-tower and they are an inseparable part of the Prague Castle skyline. The size of „the church building“ is monumental: it is 40 metres wide and 60 metres long. Construction of church building was commenced by master-builder P.Bos who was shortly replaced by Giovanni D. Orsi. To build the church need almost 70 years, the decisive phase began only after 1702 and that according to the new variant, the authorship of which is ascribed to Kristof Dientzenhofer. He died in 1722 and the building was finished by his son Kilian I. Dienzenhofer. Construction of the Church of St Nicholas significantly contributed to the development of height Baroque architecture in Prague.

The interior of the Church comes across as dramatic, as does its outer appearance. The frescoes were painted by artist Jan Lukas Kracker. Statues in the Church of Saint Nicholas were made by Ignac Frantisek Platzer, there are more than 50 of them. The most valued monuments of art preserved in the Church are set of paintings, created by K. Škréta, exhibited in the gallery.
